Beauty Before All
Friday, June 26th, 2009I just met the most gorgeous woman today, and most unexpectedly. Petite, wondrous blue eyes, lovely skin and a radiant, fun smile. In short, a captivating presence.
I walked into Hannaford Brothers to buy margarine and watermelon at 9:30 am, and there was a traffic jam at the carts. Three of us waited while this lovely woman, a little bit of a thing with a tiny white tennis hat perched atop her head, sashayed right in before us and attempted to extricate her cart from the tightly packed rows. An older gentleman tried to help her, but she managed on her own, God bless her. And when she finally got that cart free, she beamed a gorgeous smile and pronounced, “I’m almost 100!”
I did a double take and couldn’t help but chime in. “Did you say, ‘100?’”
“Yes, I’ll be 99 this September, and 100 next September.” And then she raised her arm up in true celebration, letting loose that infectious smile again. “And I’m still driving!”
“She’s going to make it to at least 105,” said her friend, who was by all accounts looking wonderful herself, but by no means a spring chicken.
“And do you know what I say to that?” she asked, this gorgeous one, staring me straight in the eye. “Damn right.”
Now that is the spirit.
